Ok, now before you jump all over me for the title or sign me up for a program, I don’t mean you should start every day off with a Bloody Maria. However, when I am on vacation I love a refreshing and spicy drink in the morning. Add in that you get a whole serving of vegetables in my drink (plus more depending on how you garnish) and how can you go wrong.
Usually this vacation morning drink for me is a spicy Bloody Mary, but recently I was introduced how good tequila could turn my “standard” into a Bloody Maria, or as Pura Vida Tequila coined theirs, a Poncho Villa. I emphasized good tequila because if you get a “cheep” brand your drink will taste cheep, and in my opinion, gross!
Pura Vida graciously sent me three bottles of their fine tequila as well as a bottle of Poncho Villa mix. Pura Vida means pure life. Their tequila is triple distilled to achieve the purest and highest quality available. It is so good, some big celebrities have stepped up to back it including Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top
For the Bloody Maria, or Poncho Villa, you use the Pura Vida Reposado Tequila. This particular tequila was recently awarded the Beverage Industry News (BIN) Editor’s Choice Award for 2013. Only 13 liquors in the entire industry receive this award annually!! It also took home gold in the Spirits of Mexico Festival in 2012 (this is known as the Academy Awards for Tequila) and won the Tequila.net’s Best of the Best award in 2012!
So now that I have you salivating for this fine tequila, let me share with you the recipe!
- 1 oz Pura Vida Reposada
- 4 oz Pura Vida Bloody Mary Maria Mix
- Shake ingredients with ice.
- Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass
- Garnish with a celery stalk and lemon wheel.
I made mine slightly different. For me, with tequila must come salt so I ran the cut side of a lime around the rim of my glass and then dipped it in salt. I also like mine spicy so I forwent the traditional garnish and sliced a hot pepper. Eat the pepper at your own risk! I use it to stir up my drink and it adds the right amount of heat for me.
As always, please drink responsibly! Come back over the next few weeks for more great tequila recipes J
