I do enjoy the benefits of living in a connected world. It is great for my kids to be able to Facetime with their grandparents and great grandparents, I love being able to have access to my grocery list and corresponding coupons right on my phone, but sometimes it feels like we are constantly “connected” to our devices and it can take a toll. It is important for our family to “disconnect” every once in a while and spend quality time together!
I was excited when I was challenged to take part in a Tech Timeout challenge with Foresters. We pledged to spend one hour each day last weekend disconnected with the aim of building better and stronger family bonds. One hour a day is not really long at all, but having made a pledge and knowing you need to account for your time makes it easier for parents to be more aware of screen time in the family. It can be easy to think of spending just 5 more minutes on Instagram (which drags on to 10.. and so on!) when we could be doing something much more worthwhile.
The first day my daughter and I decided to go vegetable picking at a local farm. It got hot, and the ride drug on a little long, but we never pulled out the iPhone for a game or movie and still had a blast!!
Forester’s have prepared a pledge form for any families who wish to make the same commitment to just one hour techtime out quality time each day. Do you want to join?
And if you are stuck for ideas on what to do to keep yourselves entertained without the trusty technology, then they have prepared a great list of 50 ideas too! (if you click the image it will get bigger and easier to read)
One way my husband actually enjoyed Tech Timeouts before kids was to go camping out where there was no cell service. We would play cards and chess and just enjoy the conversation.
Tech Timeout is offering Coping with Frugality readers the chance to win a game set to assist with your pledge. Five (5) lucky readers will win a game set.
