We adopted our cat Hank when he was just a kitten in 2002. He has been a fun loving member of our family ever since. He loves to explore in our back yard and even will fetch balled up pieces of paper you throw for him. We have always had him on a natural diet and try to get only the best for him, including when it comes to cat litter.
As much as we love Hank, from the beginning my husband and I have been drawing straws over who has to clean the litter box. It is definitely not my favorite task. In our new house we created a special entrance for Hank into the laundry room and placed his box in there. Years ago my husband decided to make his own litter box. Hank likes to “play” in his box and throws litter everywhere so we needed something with high sides. There are litter boxes at stores with roofs, but Hank never liked to be fully enclosed…. Enter the homemade Rubbermaid tub litter box. It works great!
What I find even more important than the litter box for “happy” cleaning is the type of litter. I made the mistake *once* of getting a no-name discount brand of cat litter. It was a horrible experience. Since we have such a large litter box, I shop at Sams club for our cat litter. Check out my most recent shopping trip here.
This last trip we bought the new Fresh Step with Odor Shield in the 42 pound club size!. At first I was wondering how I would haul this massive package of litter (heck, my 3 1/2 year old daughter doesn’t even weigh that much!). This cool cube shaped package comes with a stretchy handle that pulls out of the bag. The handle makes the package of litter so easy to transport. Obviously we aren’t going to dump 42 pounds of litter into the box at once so I was excited to see that the bag also sports a zipper opening so that you can keep the litter where the litter needs to stay in between box refills. Another bonus with this bag is the 50 Paw Points which is actually doubled right now through October 31st 2013. All you have to do is go to Fresh Step and when you enter your points select Sam’s Club from the drop down menu. Paw Points are fun because you can redeem them for some really great stuff!
This litter also seems to really help with the litter box smell (who wants a stinky laundry room?). The natural plant extracts (chlorophyll) and essential oils keep the litter box smelling fresh and clean. The chlorophyll acts as a sponge to soak up odors and the essential oils stop the growth of bacteria. No more stinky kitty litter box!
Have you ever heard of cat bearding? Well I hadn’t until I found out about a contest where you can win a $1000 prize pack including a $300 professional photo session with the winner and their cat and a $700 Sam’s Club gift card! To enter you can go to this linky until 9/30 to submit your photos.
I tried my own hand at cat bearding. I assumed Hank would totally fight me but he actually played along perfectly. All you have to do is follow this helpful tutorial from Stephanie at Mommy Musings here to make it easier.
