Potty training {or potty learning as I have heard used a lot recently} is a multi-stage, ongoing process.  Our goal was always to have big sister out of diapers before we had a second child.  My mother wanted to start working with her right when she turned two, but at the time, big sister was not at all interested.  She is a smart girl that has been able to do anything she has set her mind on so far, so I knew once she wanted to use the potty, she would.

The big helps for us when she was potty training was her love of two things ~ books and M&M’s.  We were able to get her to sit on the potty and try much longer if we were reading a book.  I started off reading her “potty” books but actually found that if we got books from the library every few weeks I kept her attention longer.  She understood the concepts associated with potty training, so it really was a task more of making her want to stay and sit.

And of course, the reward for going on the potty in the form of candy coated chocolate goodness always helps too.  She still will ask for M&M’s after going potty now.  I no longer offer them up since she has been out of diapers for some number of months, but if she asks I still give them to her.

BabyBjorn makes potty chairs that can add to the success of potty training at all levels.  Easy to clean, fun colors, and sleek design make this potty chair a must-have for new potty trainers or old pros.

The ergonomic design gives the BabyBjorn Potty Chair softer lines and lots of leg room so your child gets closer to the inner potty. This innovative design stands out from all the others, making bathroom time as smooth as possible.  The combination of the high backrest and comfy armrests help you’re your little one feel like a “big kid” while being supported and safe during early potty training.  It also seems more comfortable {though I haven’t sat on it myself, lol} which makes it easier for those longer sessions.

The splash guard does not get in the way for girls.  The bowl comes out for easy cleaning (with the sleek and rounded design that makes cleaning much easier) and it fits in with smooth edges so there’s no way for it to scratch or pinch your child.

I really appreciate that it does not include any of the electronic bells and whistles.  The first potty chair we had (a hand-me-down) sang songs, lighted up, made noises…. and got really annoying!  I ended up taking out all the batteries and just told my daughter it was broken.

We now consider big sister to be “potty trained” other than wearing pull-ups at night.  We had gotten to the point where we had even put away her potty chair because she was a “big girl” now.  However, when I came home from the hospital after having baby brother I was restricted from lifting anything over 20 pounds and big sister weighs approximately 27 pounds.  We explained this to her and she was understanding.  I wasn’t even thinking about having to lift her up on to the potty until the day after I came home, as I was nursing baby brother, and she comes to me “mommy I have to go potty.”  Well, she can’t get up on the big potty alone and even though she is doing great, I wasn’t about to tell her to weight.  After trying to hoist her up onto the potty while nursing a newborn I got the BabyBjorn Potty Chair back out.  We now have it sitting between the dining and living room and she just uses it when she needs to if I am unable to assist her at the moment.  It is light-weight enough that she can even move it to another area if she wants.  The only downside is that it does not have a lid.
