My poor baby girl has a double ear infection and my heart just breaks for her. Especially because the PA at the urgent care clinic today said he has never seen two ears so red!
I feel like I should have done something to catch it sooner, but I honestly saw no symptoms. According the the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of ear infections common in children include: ear pain, especially when lying down; tugging or pulling at an ear; difficulty sleeping; crying more than usual; acting more irritable than usual; difficulty hearing or responding to sounds; loss of balance; headache; fever of 100 F (38 C) or higher; drainage of fluid from the ear; loss of appetite; vomiting; diarrhea.
Monkey has had problems sleeping lately, but she has a cold with quite a lot of mucus so that constant drainage has kept her up (or woke her up) at night.
This morning she was quite irritable, but I attributed it to a conversation we had about how she was soon going to have to share mommy with baby brother. She had wanted me to snuggle and sleep in her twin bed with her and I explained that mommy was too big and it was too uncomfortable. This was then followed by about 2 1/2 hours of what I thought was a temper tantrum. When she finally calmed down she said to me “Mommy, my ear doesn’t hurt as much anymore.”
Now, I know my daughter is only 2 1/2 but she is very articulate and I rely on her to tell me when she has a problem and usually she is great about it. When I ask her to use her words she does and she tells me what is wrong. So when she finally told me that her ear had been hurting I was worried. I also felt bad about letting her just cry and scream for 2 1/2 hours! About 30 minutes later she told me her ear hurt again so off we went to urgent care.
Now she is on that wonderful pink antibiotic for the next 10 days as well as a strict regimen of ibuprofen for the next few days until I am sure that she is feeling better. Luckily Monday is a holiday so I can stay home with her and my mom is taking her on Tuesday (she watches her one day a week). Hopefully she will be her jolly, happy, talkative self by the time she goes back to daycare on Wednesday!
