I am not a breakfast person ~ I don’t like eggs and I don’t like to get up early. I have been saying for a long time that I need to start eating breakfast and being pregnant has finally forced me to do it. However, I still don’t like to get up early so I have been on the search for something nutritious and yummy that I could just grab on my way out the door.
I have looked into “breakfast bars” but most of those are LOADED with sugar and don’t have much protein. If you are a regular reader you know that my body has issues with processing sugar and so sugar makes me extremely sleepy (not hyper like most people) and I therefore try to avoid it as much as possible during the day and instead try to get consistent protein to keep my energy up. I was so excited when I was contacted to review the KIND Nuts & Spices line.
KIND Nuts & Spices is the newest line of KIND bars finely crafted from the highest quality whole nuts and nature’s most delicious spices. Each KIND Nuts & Spices bar is a good source of protein, is high in fiber and contains only 5g of sugar (or less) — and nothing artificial! Seriously these bars seem to have so many things not in them that you will wonder why you’ve been eating ingredients you can’t pronounce in other bars.
The KIND bars are all natural (GMO free), Gluten Free, contain no sugar alcohols, are low glycemic, have very low sodium. They do have things in them like nuts, cashews, ginger, sugar, chicory root, honey, salt, and other items you can pronounce. I was sent a sample of each of the KIND Nuts & Spices bars. These bars use spices for flavor instead of added fruits and sugars so your body doesn’t have to take in any artificial sweeteners which has been a blessing for me.
My favorite for breakfast is the Madagascar Vanilla Almond. I was worried that it would have a strong vanilla or candy-taste which for me is a turn off first thing in the morning. I was delighted that it didn’t. It was healthy and tasty and unlike the other bars it doesn’t use chocolate to mask any of the nutty flavor.
My favorite for a mid-afternoon or evening snack is the Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt bar. I was introduced to the combination of dark chocolate and sea salt when I was pregnant with my daughter and I fell in love! This one has 7g fiber, 6 g protein, and only 5g sugar!
The KIND Nuts and Spices bars all have approximately 200 calories, 16 grams of fat, 5 – 7 grams of protein and fiber, and about 4-5 grams of sugar. Those nutritional stats make these bars much better than any of the breakfast bars I was finding in the grocery store. I am even comfortable sharing these with my 2 year old daughter when she asks for a bite.
