Shame on You Ralph Lauren | US Olympic Uniforms Made in China

Men will wear navy blue blazers with the Olympic team patch, along with red, white and blue neckties and white pants. Women will pair the blazers with similar-colored scarves and skirts.  And everyone will be wearing BERETS!

1x1.trans Shame on You Ralph Lauren | US Olympic Uniforms Made in China

To represent the United States at the Olympic opening games, the privately sponsored US Olympics committee hired US designer Ralph Lauren to design the uniforms.  And what does Ralph Lauren do?  Not only does he put our American athletes in French berets, but he had the ENTIRE uniform MADE IN CHINA!!  And the Olympics committee can’t claim ignorance because Ralph Lauren did the exact same thing in 2008.

Why, given the current US economy and the high unemployment rate would the Olympics committee hire a designer known for outsourcing his work?  They claim it is because of cost.  Apparently Ralph Lauren is doing this out of the goodness of his own heart.  I am sure there are dozens of US designers who would have happily done the same thing and kept the uniforms MADE IN THE USA!

And there is no cost break to the millions of US consumers who will want to purchase this look (well, maybe not the berets…).  The cost of this uniform is out of the reach of most Americans.  — $598 for the women’s blazer and $498 for the silk skirt.  The men’s blazer is a staggering $795, flat front trousers $295 and nubuck shoes are $165.   And that silly beret? $55!

Not only am I appalled about the uniforms being made in China and their exorbitant cost, I also don’t like the design and how it portrays Americans.   Celebrity stylist Robert Verdi put it best – think “Chariots of Fire” meets American Airlines flight attendant.  While Verdi said he likes the fitted white pants and the men’s shoes, the overall look was a failure.  “It was a combination of things to me: rich, British private school kids . . . and Mr. Howell from ‘Gilligan’s Island.’ I wasn’t sure if they were really chic crossing guards or Olympians. It was unclear to me.”

So are you as appalled as I am?  Please share your thoughts below and share this post.  Let’s let Ralph Lauren and the Olympic committee know what Americans really think!!

  1. Wow. That is bizarre and infuriating. I would be pretty ticked if I was asked to wear French styles as a US athlete, too.
    What are they thinking?!

Wow… I don’t know what to say to that. I think the berets are not very fashionable, but not so upset about those, but the fact that the clothing is made in China is a bit appauling. He should publicly apologize and take an event like this more seriously. It was an honor for him to be chosen for this position and he puts it in the hands of a totally different country where the people are probably making next to nothing… And then charges a ridiculous amount for the outfits. No wonder so many other countries look down on Americans. Shame on Ralph Lauren!

Wow! Just wow! Dressing AMERICAN athletes like the French?? And making the AMERICAN uniforms in China?? Hmmm. Very AMERICAN Ralph Lauren! :( Bummer. I didn’t really like Ralph Lauren before anyway… But this is AWFUL!! Sad really. Too bad he doesn’t value his own country enough to dress the athletes like AMERICANS and have the uniforms made right here in AMERICA!

  4. :( That’s horrible! I’m not too upset about the berets, but the fact that they are made in China is embarrassing! Shame on Ralph Lauren.

Outrageous! ! I’m so upset. Purely and totally outrageous!

  6. I had NO clue!! And since I’m currently doing a Made in America event, I can guarantee you there are numerous companies who would’ve keep everything made here!! I’m SO glad you’ve brought this to our attention. It’s very discouraging to say the least.

  7. All athletes should refuse to use the uniforms. If I were one of them I would be demoralized. So much for American pride. It’s disgraceful.

I will never buy Ralph Lauren again, it’s not even good quality anyway. I’ve had to discard garments that shrink or fade –no wonder, they’re made in China

Please send a message to the Olympic Committee, and to Ralph Lauren Inc. for good measure.

    • Birdie – I have been spending some time in the world of twitter and I have seen many Olympic athletes who are speaking out against the uniforms. I would LOVE to see the whole team boycott the uniforms!

  8. wow that is crazy!! I am really annoyed by this too.

  10. Well said! It’s a nice way to express the thoughts. Hope the authority will notice this important fact of the huge event soon and think about it for twice. Thanks!

  11. I am sure with all the public outcry over this issue something will change.

  12. This is appalling! You’d think the US Olympics Committee would have to approve the design and all that goes into it first. And after it happening last Olympics, they should have known better. Why would anyone think this would be acceptable? I really hope the athletes boycott.

  13. That’s not cool. They totally do look like English schoolchildren in French hats. &I’m most upset about the China thing- I don’t care if his OWN line of clothing is made there, but for the Olympics uniform, he really couldn’t find someone here to make it? Annoying.

  14. Sinful. :( I agree that there HAS to be designers in the U.S. that would be willing to help… nice of him to do it out of the “goodness of his own heart” but apparel from France and China for our US Olympians? Really?
